Professional Editor Layout in Unity
The Unity editor is feature packed and user friendly, right out of the gate. But, there is always room for improvement. There is nothing wrong with the default layout on the Unity Editor (See image below). It can definitely get you through any project you take on.
However, there are few things we can change to make life a little easier down the road. With a few minor adjustments we can change the work flow and add some functionality to our layout. Just as with anything else, you have to do what works for you, but here are some adjustments that I highly encourage you to implement.
If you look at the picture above you can see a stark difference from the default layout. Looking closely you’ll notice that the scene is broken down into sections. One of the most noticeable changes is the Scene and Game sections. in the default, they are tabs in the same section, meaning you can only view one of them at a time. What I’ve done is split that section into two seperate windows. in the Professional view you can see the Scene view, which is like your work area, on top. Sitting below it is the Game view(blue square, black background). This view is what the game will look like real time. we’ve also moved the Hierarchy and Project tabs to the right. You can change the project tab from two column view to One column view by clicking on the three dots at the top of that tab.
If you get overwhelmed or accidentally remove a tab that you need, just go to the top right corner click the drop down and select Default. that will reset your layout. that drop down is also where you can save your new layout for future projects.
